Our aim is always to give our patients the clearest picture of their eye health. One way we do that is with an OCT scan, an advanced imaging test that can be added to your routine eye examination. It’s safe, quick, non-invasive and provides detailed information about the health of your eyes.
What is an OCT?
OCT stands for optical coherence tomography. It works a bit like an ultrasound, but instead of using sound waves, it uses near-infrared light waves. These create detailed cross-sectional images of the different layers at the back of the eye, including the retina – the light-sensitive layer that allows you to see. The scan is painless, takes just a few minutes, and gives your optician a more detailed scan than a standard eye examination.
What can an OCT scan detect?
An OCT scan can detect early signs of a wide range of eye conditions, often before symptoms appear. This allows for early treatment, which can help to slow progression.
Glaucoma, which affects the optic nerve (the bundle of fibres that carries visual information from your eye to your brain). Damage to the optic nerve can lead to vision loss if not detected early
Macular Degeneration, which affects the macula (the central part of the retina responsible for detailed vision such as reading or recognising faces). This causes loss of central vision.
Problems with the retina, including swelling, thinning or other changes that can affect your eyesight.
